Conor Harrington's Weekend Warriors

All quiet for a month and them bam two fantastic shows set to open the same week and even the same night!! We have already mentioned the Bast opening this thursday and also opening in central London is Weekend Warrior.
Weekend Warrior at Lazarides Gallery will showcase new works by Conor Harrington. The show will feature paintings made from oil and aerosol paint alongside a series of new charcoal drawings.
Central to his oil canvasses is the male figure, representing the masculinity that is a commonplace of urban culture. WEEKEND WARRIORS explores the world of historic re-enactment as illustrated above (Horsepower, 2007), where men dress up at the weekends as warriors, generals and emperors to live out their escapistfantasies as heroes and supermen. The Napoleonic era was a time of great upheaval when men went into battle in uniforms dripping with gold as symbols of power and wealth, almost turning the battlefield into a 19th century catwalk. Similarly, in today’s bling culture, the urban male has the same preoccupation with gold as a symbol of their power, wealth and glory. However, Harrington does not aim to remake historic paintings – his work focuses on the 21st century western world, and masculinity and artifice are the driving forces in his work. Rather than emphasizing wealth and valour, he looks to highlight the pretense and allusion tot hese qualities within contemporary society.

BOOBY TRAP

We are getting excited about this show already, we mentioned it at the start of the month and we have now been sent the details for the forthcoming "BAST show.
Leonard Street Gallery present their first show of 2008 titled "Booby Trap". The new exhibition will feature installations by Brooklyn-based "BAST along with fellow New York artist Judith Supine featured in the Project Room, opening 25 January.
"BAST combines the varied yet complimentary elements of pop-culture, political sarcasm, and a pinch of the Anarchist Punk movement with mixed media collage and silkscreen techniques to create boldly stylised and somewhat gritty images.
His work appropriates this medley to convey his own interpretations of American life. Guns, grenades and Molotov cocktails are often waiting to be unleashed by a host of Disney and Warner Brothers' characters that use their weapons as carelessly as kids use water balloons, often asking the question, "What if cartoon characters ruled the world?"
In a slightly similar vein, Judith Supine arranges magazine cut outs and photographic images into colourful and strikingly cohesive large-scale assemblages. Supine's arresting street art is obsessed with garish, neon - coloured characters that live among us - collages of big lips and staring eyes-on industrial doors and abandoned walls throughout lower Manhattan and London.
The exhibition will feature installations by both artists and works that vary from small to large scale. The resulting worlds and portraits developed by both artists are at once intimate and, with an enormous, looming presence, monumental in their impact.
Show opens to the public 25th January and runs untill the 16th February.
Preview 24th January 6:00 – 9:00PM

SAVE THE LIGHT

I have to be honest, I'm not a massive fan of The Light bar itself but you have to agree that the building the bar is housed in is fantastic. Built in 1893, this former power station is an historic landmark. It is the first building that you see in Hackney when you approach from the City and as such it separates two very different areas. Now yet another 53 storey tower of steel wrapped in glass is proposed on the site – threatening 233 Shoreditch High Street with demolition. Developments of this scale will not only destroy the setting of Shoreditch's historic streetscape, they will also cast many commercial and residential buildings into shade. The fate of The Light, is going to be decided on the 23 January 2008, please act quickly by letting Hackney council know your views on the Bishop Place proposal. You can help by taking a moment to sign the online petition here.

NEW YORK IN THE 70'S

Jaguarshoes presents NEW YORK IN THE 70'S AT DREAMBAGSJAGUARSHOES, A Photographic Exhibition by ALLAN TANNENBAUM.
Back by popular demand, they have re-installed this exhibition into DreamBagsJaguarShoes for a three week period. This is your last chance to catch it...so don't miss out.
Having worked for New York City weekly, SoHo News throughout the 70s and the early 80s, Allans photos of that era perfectly capture the spirit of New York at that time. Tannenbaum made a name for himself with his shots of New York nightlife, celebrities, and political events. He earned the respect of prominent New Yorkers and eventually landed an exclusive photo session with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, one week before the Beatle was killed. This is the first time Allan's work has been shown in the UK and the exhibition will showcase some of Allan's best shots from 70s New York Nightlife, capturing the sheer electric buzz of the Studio 54 and Paradise Garage era.

JONATHAN HARRIS

For seven straight days, Jonathan Harris took at least one photograph every five minutes while on an Alaskan whale hunt. Accompanying the Inupiat Eskimos on thousand-year-old tradition, the Inupiat whale hunt provides the community’s annual food supply, currently limited by international law to 22 whales a year.
Documenting his entire experience with a sequence of 3,214 photographs, starting with his taxi ride to Newark airport, and ending with the butchering of a second whale, seven days later. Photographs were taken at five-minute intervals, even while he slept (using a chronometer), established a constant “photographic heartbeat”. In moments of high adrenaline, this photographic heartbeat would quicken (to a maximum rate of 37 pictures in five minutes while the first whale was being cut up), mimicking the changing pace of his own heartbeat.
Interesting idea with some great photos and nice navigation.

NEW SWOON PRINT

First release of the new year comes from Just Seeds based in the USA with a bunch of new screenprints released including this new Swoon print titled Huahuapan de Leon (pictured above).
Here's what Swoon has to say about this new print:
"This is a portrait of a woman sewing a soccer ball. Every soccer ball sold anywhere in the world takes at least a day's labor to piece together. The threads inside of each ball are grey with the oils from the hands of the person who sewed it. I was introduced to the women of Huahuapan de Leon because alongside their craft sewing balls, they have organized a worker's cooperative and are beginning to fight for the rights of indigenous people and women in the south of Mexico. With this portrait I honor the labor that goes into each object that they create, as well as the work that they are doing to bring about social change.
All profits from anything I sell through the Just Seeds site is donated directly to projects, the likes of which I would like to see more of in the world."
Each print is unique: the paper is hand stained and varies greatly.
