Jon Hammer EXHIBITION
Jon Hammer is a self taught artist who began by daubing the streets with activist punk slogans in the early eighties. On discovering the book ‘Subway Art’ in early ‘85 his new direction was set. He started ‘writing’ on the Underground Railway during London’s graffiti heyday from ‘86-’88, using the tag ‘Elate’. The Acid House movement that followed blew a channel to his inner voice and painting backdrops replaced trains.
The scene quickly faded and he switched to canvas and began reading an array of subjects, focusing on the history of painting and the transcendental arts. Drawing inspiration from the masters of painting and the intuition of shamanic lore he has patiently and methodically developed his natural ability.
His debut exhibition will be at The Brick Lane Gallery this Thursday, 28th November . There is a private view for collectors is on the 27th November.Numerous original paintings will be available for sale, also prints, including some customised one-offs as well as various curios and oddities.

Children of the Can Book

Children Of The Can: 25 Years of Bristol Graffiti documents the Bristol graffiti story from the early days of 3D’s New York-inspired work and John Nation's grass roots influence at the Barton Hill Youth Club to the current crop of artists who have helped to make Bristol’s graffiti scene one of the UK's most influential and diverse. Children Of The Can features the work of all the city's best-known and (until now) slept-on talent, including:
2Keen, 3D, Awkward, Banksy, Cheo, China Mike, Filthy Luker, Haka, Inkie, Jeff Row, Jody, Just Another Crew, Kato, KTF, Lokey, Mr.Jago, Mudwig, Nick Walker, Rowdy, Shimz, Sickboy, Soker, Souls On Fire, TNP, TUB, Turoe, Twentieth Century Frescoes, What Collective, Will Barras, The Z-Boys and many more…
Author Felix ‘FLX’ Braun started writing graffiti in the mid-80s and grew up with the Bristol scene painting alongside the likes of Inkie and Nick Walker. He continues to live and paint in the city and has unrivalled access to the artists and their work. Here, they tell their stories in their own words. Most of the pictures in Children of the Can have never before been published and many have been provided from the artists’ sketchbooks and private collections.
The book has been published by Tangents books and is currently on pre-order from their website

Herbert Baglione @ LAZ
We have been fans of Herbert Baglione's art since 2004 when I became aware of his work via one of his stunning screenprints titled "Natureza Morta II" which Adam Neate had picked up in Brazil from the Choque Cultural Gallery. We are delighted to see he now has a solo show opening here in London tonight at Lazarides Gallery.
For those not familiar with Baglione, here is what Laz have to say about him.
Brazilian artist Baglione is an established contemporary painter who draws on strong, simple mural designs, extreme physical figures and human and alien icons, rendered in the style of cave drawings. His style has influenced the vibrant street art movement in South America for at least ten years. His position as one of Brazil’s most distinctive artists has also cemented his international acclaim in the design and art worlds.
Jaded with the scene and what he saw around him, Baglione started experimenting with new ways to look at the street, using the extremes of urban architecture to create his paintings, provoking a new dialogue. Although his figurative subjects are ever present, his art is constantly growing and changing, relying on a strong palette. This new work work has a strong minimalism set against an elaborate calligraphy and new injection of colour.
In his new body of work comprising twenty paintings in small and large scale in acrylics, enamel and varnish, Baglione uses characters that seem to bloom and reclaim life. Textures from urban dirt and scratched out typography found in big global cities that he experimented with years ago and are now integrated with his recent work on geometric patterns, fractals, religion and erotica. Two Broken Knees marks a new phase in which the painting process has become a religious ritual in a search of faith lost in the great urban centres of the world. He uses painting, drawing and installation as new instruments, continuing to touch on subjects which he considers provoking such as death, individualism and chaos.
Two Broken Knees opens tonight with a private view and will run until the 20th December

JOHN SIMPSON
John Simpson is a British artist who originally made an impact with illustrations for streetwear brand Carhartt and collaborations with fashion designer Wale Adeyemi. Unique hand-executed monotypes provide the focus for his creativity, the delicate process resulting in work caught somewhere between childhood imagination and adult reasoning.
Simpson creates and enlivens mythological and fairy-tale animals in scenes that range from violent to tender. His subtlety of expression produces images that can be imbued with aggressive energy and yet simultaneously display a fragile beauty. The works articulate primal instincts through anthropomorphic characters that provoke human empathy and identification. Despite the initial influence of urban art and street graphics, drawing has always been the most important element of his work, with imagery strongly relating to the visual tradition of artists Goya and Redon. In addition to his sell-out show at ocontemporary last year, Simpson has exhibited to acclaim in New York and continues to show in both the US and UK. His first London solo show opens tomorrow evening the 20th with a private view at Ocontemporary.
The show which opens to the public on the 21 November will feature new works and a selection of new screenprints.

CHLOE EARLY @ STOLEN SPACE
A new exhibition at Stolen Space gallery, opens this Thursday with Chloe Early's second solo show at the gallery titled "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Spinning In Space". Below is from Stolen Space:
Still set against an architectural background Chloe Early’s new work highlights the fantastical element of her painted landscapes. She is using more imagery layering motifs and references moving away from the lone figure to include a more dynamic collection of figures, couples and animal herds. Amidst the urban structures, carousel, playground and circus imagery combine to highlight leisure, motion and escapism. Early shows us a world deconstructed and put back together in an unsettling way. There is a sense of celebration, stars twinkle, bright lights flash. A dream continues.

IT'S A KLING THING

Kling by Kling is a fashion label created by London based Swede Karolina Kling. Since establishing the brand in 2006 the label has gained international attention for its distinctive prints and playful designs, which have been described as Viktor & Rolf on acid.
With a background in graphic design, Karolina has a unique take on fashion and regards the work she produces as 3D products rather than fashion garments. The beautiful and intricate patterns add an extra dimension to her work and have made it possible for her to develop collections that are simultaneously highly personal and commercially successful. Her collections are now distributed worldwide.
The exhibition at DreamBagsJaguarShoes will be Karolina's first solo and encompasses all aspects of her work. On the ground floor there will be a monochromatic multimedia installation that incorporates her patterns, clothing and characters in 2D and 3D form. The basement level will host a pictorial preview of her forthcoming collection 'Sparkling nights' which has been based on stories from her closest friends.

JAMES ROPER

Opening this evening at the Foster Gallery is a new exhibition featuring the work of James Roper titled "INTO THE FOLD".This is James Roper's first solo show at the gallery which will feature a stunning selection of new paintings.
James Roper explores the physicality of the human body whilst also drawing comparisons with baroque sculpture and iconography. He creates a sort of “optical hyperactivity” through his seductive paintings, their content, style and surface seemlessly intermix into intense imagery.
There is a private view this evening from 6-9pm at FORSTER on Rivington Street.

FAILE : Lost in Glimmering Shadows

Lazarides Gallery presents a major new 10 day project (7 – 17 November 2008) by the renowned cult art duo Faile. Taking over an area of an old school in Kennington, Faile is bringing its unique brand of artistic adventure to the streets of south London.
Faile’s work takes the visual vocabulary of popular culture, urban decay and consumer excess, and reworks them into new, exciting and sometimes troubling narratives for the viewer. Layers of posters torn away from walls or comic book-inspired remixes, Faile’s instantly recognizable practice refers to a visual culture that is sometimes disposable, yet demands serious attention.
Lost in Glimmering Shadows features a new series of paintings and sculptures which explore an ambivalent attitude to the hypermodern culture of today’s USA. As well as incorporating images and texts from the chaos of the modern urban landscape, the works use imagery, stories and patterns from Native American Indian culture. A metaphor of sorts emerges in this juxtaposition; the expanse of contemporary commercialism at the expense of society's connection with nature and spirit.
