Brick Lane Street Art Eagle Mural by Artist Pad303

We recently took to the streets of Shoreditch for a post lockdown street art walk around the neighborhood to take a looks at some of the new London street art and graffiti that went up onto walls over the last few weeks.

One-stop on our walk was the Allen Gardens ( not to be confused with Allens Gardens also in London), a communal park area that runs along Buxton Street behind Brick Lane.

The building walls in the surrounding area of the gardens and the boundary walls of the gardens themselves have become in recent years a hotspot for London urban art with graffiti artists and the occasional street artists spray-painting works across these spaces.

It’s not uncommon to find artists on any given day painting at this popular location and what with the scale of the walls both in height and length, there are frequent paint jams taken place every other weekend with groups of artists working collectively across the wall with a unified colour palette.

Our recent visit to the Allen Gardens, we discover Kent-based artist Pad303 at work on a large scale mural making out the brickwork and initial outlines for his mural.

On seeing the spray-painted brickwork pattern we instantly recognized the mural work of that of PAD303. We had previously seen the artist work when we attended both the 2018 and 2019 edition of the Cheltenham Paint Festival where he painted as one of the invited festival artists.

As with his much loved 3d shark mural from 2018 and the Star Wars At-At Walker piece from 2019 both painted in Cheltenham, PAD303 was painting another of his 3-dimensional brick artwork murals.

This new mural was in Allen Gardens and featuring a large eagle in flight, slowing itself down for a landing, wings spread wide, and the tail down.

We stopped to chat briefly with the artist, taking some photographs of the work in progress before continuing on our post lockdown street art walk.

With the brickwork painted and the eagle outlines laid out, artist Pad303 is pictured adding a 3d like effect to the eagle to giving it a brick-like appearance as if it's emerging from the brick wall.

We, unfortunately, did not make it back to the gardens later that evening and instead made a return visit the following day to photograph the completed Eagle mural.

Knowing how popular the Allen Gardens walls are with graffiti artists, especially at the weekend - we made sure to get to the gardens early to ensure we managed to photograph the completed mural.

Due to the semi-legal aspect of the walls, the works are ever-changing with some pieces only lasting a few days before something fresh is painted over it.

Our early morning visit had paid off, no sooner had we finished photographing this Pad303 eagle mural a group of artists rolled up to the wall with bags of spray paint and emulsion paint and began rolling over the eagle mural with the emulsion allowing them to paint something new.

The mural had been up less than 24 hours before getting taken out by other artists but such is the nature of these semi-legal paint sites such as Leake Street in South London. Most artists understand this when they paint at these locations. If you missed this Pad303 mural take a look at our pictures of the finished piece below.
