Hookedblog has just returned from a few sunny days spent in Aberdeen, Scotland for the second edition of the NuArt Aberdeen festival where 12 international and national street artists were invited to the city to paint as part of the festival.

One of the 12 invited artists was Argentinian-born street and urban artist Tamara Djurovic better known as Hyuro. Currently living and working in Valencia, Spain, Hyuro is best known for her painterly compositions that combine “vernacular depictions of femininity with socio-political undertones.”

We last caught up with the artist in 2017 when we spent some time watching her paint a mural in Ostend, Belgium and were fortunate to watch her at work over a number of days on her latest mural ¨An affective bond¨ in Aberdeen.

Painted on a huge wall high above street level on the East Green, the piece features two female figures attempting to push away from each other but stuck as their shirts are tangled together preventing them from separating.

'An Affective Bond' Mural

According to Hyuro; "the image is inspired by the union between Scotland and England, two countries that share a border and joined to form part of the United Kingdom. The Scottish people were never supporters of the union and during the first half of the eighteenth century there were uprisings, so the tension between English and Scottish takes thousands of years.

At the end of this year, Scotland will have to make a determination if it should have the right to choose between this new relationship of the United Kingdom (with the EU) or it chooses to be an independent country.
The image aims to transmit the relationships of conflicts and contradictions that characterize our most complex side."
