Dalek & Delta
at The Elms Lesters Gallery

Tonight at the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, sees the opening preview of an exhibition of new works from James Marshall, aka DALEK, and Boris Tellegen, aka DELTA. This exhibition brings together two artists whose majestic use of colour, geometrical and architectural references have written a new chapter in street art’s history. We have long been fans of both of these artist but especially Daleks work. From his early London exhibitions in the Best gallery with his painting of the infamous Space Monkey character on beautiful old bits of cardboard, to the fantastic mural on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, NY which I first stumbled upon in 2003, we loved the strong bold colours and crazy characters featured in his work and have been fans since.

In April 2007 we got to see Dalek's solo show at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. This show saw Dalek's work move in a new direction, less of the Space Monkey character and more focus on vibrant layered patterns of colour. We were blown away by the work and quality of the lines at that show and are really looking forward to seeing where Dalek's work is it at two years on. It will also be interesting to see the contrast between the two very different colour pallets each of the artist use in their work.

The show runs from 28 August - 26 September, with a Private View tonight, 27 August, 6 – 9pm

Invader on the streets of London

Looks like Invader managed to find some time to hit up the streets of London. Here is one of the large pieces we spotted in East London. We know that there are 3 in East London that have been sighted and a new one has also been spotted on Rathbone Place, close to the Lazarides Gallery where Invaders show is taking place.

Here is another Invader piece out East captured by Mermaid99.
And one last photo captured by our good friend over at Solaris100 who bumped into the man himself on the street out East while he was installing the piece pictured up top.

Always interesting to see how works like these are installed. This photo also gives you an idea of the size of the piece.
Keep yours eyes open and look up!

The exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone will run through to the 17 September.

Invader's Low Fidelity
Exhibition at Lazarides

After having hit 40 cities around the world, from the Cote D'Azur to Katmandu, from Manchester to Mombassa in the past decade with his infamous street mosaics, the artist Invader, is bringing his unique vision to Lazarides' Rathbone Gallery in London.
Low Fidelity will feature all new works from the series ‘Rubikcubism’. Using the famous 80’s puzzle game’s cubes as pixels, the artist has recreated album covers by rock bands such as the Velvet Underground, The Cure, Roxy Music, David Bowie and Michael Jackson. In addition to these classic images as well as a selection of sculptures and original works on paper, Invader has taken the pixelated image one-step further crafting his very own ‘barcodes’. These abstract works are only discernable with the aid of a mobile phone digital camera, the image from which is then ‘decoded’ into a text message.

The exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone will run from the 14th August through the 17th September.

Cept Interview

The august issue of UK Adapta has just gone online and features a great interview from Selph with London Graffiti writer Cept.

Here's what Selph had to say : Cept's pieces have consistently been appearing on the streets of East London for as long as I can remember. With a long history steeped in graffiti, it was only natural that he started dabbling in fine art and prints as well. His colour choices and letter techniques are second to none and more often than not, his work is accompanied by a playful message. His style has always been one step ahead of the rest and for that reason, it has been one of my goals to track him down and interview him.

You can read Selph's interview in it's entirety here.

Beautiful Losers Screening
at The ICA London

We blogged about the Beautiful Losers film which was screened last October here in London at the BFI and the ICA, both sold out very quickly and if like us you missed it first time around now is your chance to see the film again at the ICA.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.
Beautiful Losers will run from on 6 - 18, 20, 22 - 24 August. £8 / £7 concessions / £6 ICA members. Opening night: Thursday 6 August, 7.30pm - SCREENING + Q&A +DJs SLAM CITY SKATES | CRYSTAL VISION

ICA | The Mall | LONDON

Graffiti Planet 2 - Book Release

Good start to the week, this little gem just arrived. It's the follow up to Graffiti Planet and this second volume follows on where the first finished - showcasing more of the best Graffiti from around the globe. Really liking the size format of this graffiti book, slightly bigger the the London Street Art books which felt a like postcard books, this despite the small format feels more like a proper book.

The book has been compiled and introduced by KET. For those of you out there not familiar with New York based KET, he is a world-renowned graff artist, writer, lecturer and graffiti historian. He founded and published the urban lifestyle magazine, Stress, and launched the world's first hip-hop journal. The book is jam packed with some fantastic pictures KET has selected. On a UK tip there are pieces from Aroe, London's Skore & Merc, Essex based Frame, Crack 15 and Seize and Newcastle's Funk and Kron. Our good friend Elph, representing Scotland is also featured. Overall a well presented book with some fantastic pictures and all for just under a tenner, I would definatly recommend getting a copy. Only one small thing that bugged me about the book was the inclusion of some Street Art pieces. To me , this is a graffiti book, not sure if it was the publisher that pushed them to make the book appeal to a wider market or if KET selected them. I just felt they were not needed and didn't really fit in with the rest of the work. The two pieces you will see when you get a copy are the Banksy Flowers Stencil piece in East London and a wall of pasteups by Sephard Fairey in Miami both which I felt were outta place. But like I said only a small issue I had and I wouldn't let it stop you buying this great book.Graffiti Planet 2 is published by Michael O'Mara Books and is out later this month. The book is also available from Amazon.
