American Artist Beau Stanton Mural in Walthamstow, London

We recently returned to St.James street in East London to catch some photographs of the completed mural by US artist Beau Stanton.

Dividing his time between New York and Los Angeles, Stanton was invited to the East London neighborhood by local art collective Wood Street Walls to paint a new mural in the city.

Stanton has been a regular visitor to the UK, having had two solo exhibitions with Bristol-based That Art Gallery.

He has also painted a number of other murals in the UK, one in London painted back in 2013 but has since been painted over, and more recently he was invited to paint a wall at the first edition of the Cheltenham Paint Festival that took place last year.

We caught up with Stanton while he was working on his mural on Cassiobury Road a short walk from St. James Street Overground and it took a further two visits before we were able to photograph the finished wall.

Usually, for us, its parked cars/trucks that are often parked in front of the walls preventing us from getting clean final images of the mural but on our first visit back to St. James Street the scissor lift was still parked next to the wall and it was another two weeks before we made it back up to this part of London.

For the design of his Walthamstow mural, Stanton drew inspiration from the building owners shop 'Adrian Irwin’s Hi-Fi Electronics and Lighting repair shop, and the Tiffany style lamps he has for sale in his space.

Working over a number of days Stanton redecorated the gable end of the building much to the delight of local resistants, with many stopping to admire the artwork and watch the artist at work. Others shouted out praise at the artist up in the lift as they cycled past on their bikes.
