Portuguese Graffiti Artist BORDALO II's Endangered Dreams Unicorn In Aberdeen, Scotland

Hookedblog recently returned from a few sunny days spent in Aberdeen, Scotland for the second edition of the Nuart Aberdeen street art festival, where 12 international and national street artists were invited to the city to paint as part of the festival.

One of the invited street artists we were excited about seeing at work while we were in town was Portuguese artist Artur Bordalo aka Bordalo II.

We had seen the artist's impressive work before having caught the piece he did last year in Dublin, Ireland and we also got to see the large scale sculptural piece he created for the Stavanger edition of the NuArt festival in Norway.

It was fascinating to check in on Bordalolo II over a number of days watching as he and his assistant made progress on the sculptural work.

The first few days as they sliced up large chunks of discarded plastic gathered from Aberdeen and the surrounding area it was hard to envision how this pile of trash could be transformed.

But on each visit, the assembled structure on the ground grew in size and eventually, it was hoisted and attached to the wall - it was only at this point that the shape of an animal became visible.

For Nuart Aberdeen, Bordalo II continued his ongoing ‘Big Trash Animals’ series of sculptures with a nod to Scotland’s national animal - the Unicorn.

With Scotland being famed for its love for, and long history of, myths and legends, it’s no surprise that Bordalo II picked up on this fabled creature and its significance within Scottish cultural heritage.

“It’s not about turning the trash into something beautiful, it’s about creating images of victims with what kills them.” — Bordalo II
