Usugrow At StolenSpace Gallery

Usugrow returns to StolenSpace Gallery, on this occasion for a solo show entitled 'Hasadhu, In The Night Before A Storm' which is opening this Thursday 01 April.

This exhibition will be Usugrow’s premier solo show in London. The new collection of work takes the viewer inside the mind of Hasadhu. Hasadhu is the fictional character created by Usugrow to reflect his own thoughts, almost an alter ego the artist becomes whilst drawing. When Usugrow produces his artwork, Hasadhu always travels inside his mind and this spiritual journey conducts the process of the work. Usugrow describes the art work itself as a big storm which will engulf everybody around him and the process of making artwork as the calm night before the storm. Those nights are a quiet and personal moment that he enjoys with happiness, clarity and peace. Through this work the artist wants to share that feeling with the audience, seen through the eyes of Hasadhu.

Signed copies of Usugrows book, Love Hate From JP, with FIFTY24SF Gallery, will also be available.

The show opens tomorrow with a private view, Thursday 01 April and will run at the gallery until the 18 April.

D*Face's Christina Aguilera - Bionic Cover

So I would never have guessed that I would be posting about Christina Aguilera on this blog but hey there you go. It would appear Christina is following in the footsteps of Madonna in the commissioning of a Street Artist to design the album artwork. In the case of Madonna it was Mr. Brainwash who was commissioned for the Madonna Celebration album. And now we see the artwork for the forthcoming album Bionic from Christina Aguilera has been created by D*Face

Pictoplasma - Pen to Paper Launch

Berlin based project Pictoplasma is regarded as the world’s leading authority on contemporary character design. Starting with the first Conference in 2004, a diverse, international audience has been attending Pictoplasma Festivals in Berlin, New York and Argentina establishing a vast creative network and lively exchange of ideas. It’s numerous publications and events focusing on the impact and role of character design within the world of contemporary art and design have found international acclaim.

Their latest publication, Pen to Paper, launches in the UK with an exhibition at Concrete Hermit on the 25th March. The book presents the most adventurous images of a select group of international artists whose work finds its genesis in traditional analogue techniques. The recent revival of analogue skills has injected immeasurable visual wealth into the world of illustration, fine art and especially character design. Artists reject the computer and channel their creativity through spontaneous freehand drawing. The spontaneity of this kind of creativity allows for a more free-flowing form of expression, leading to edgy and untamed beings, erupting with energy – the perfect antidote to the plethora of digital imagery abundant today.

James Jessop At HIgh Roller Society

After recent solo exhibitions in São Paulo and Copenhagen, four of James Jessop’s finest works will see their UK debut at High Roller Society, the newest gallery to London’s progressive East end. Titled BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, this solo show reveals Jessop’s trademark style: large-scale spoof horror paintings that present a visual feast of transcribed B-movie posters, 60s sex/sleaze paperback book covers, and 1980s New York subway graffiti.

The exhibition launches tonight Friday, 19 March 2010, with the release of a limited edition 5 colour screen print based on his notorious King Kong painting series.

Pictoplasma Festival 2010 Opener

Cool clip for the upcoming Pictoplasma Character conference in Berlin next month. The video titled "But along the way there is danger" has been created by Fons Schiedon. Old school 3D glasses are needed to enjoy this weirdly wonderful clip.

Dave Kinsey Paris Prints

Some new Dave Kinsey prints dropping later today Firday 19 March 2010. The 'Paris' prints being released will be a set of 2 and 1 special edition 18 x 24 silver print.

'Paris I & II', will be released via BLK/MRKT Editions and they are 3-color screenprint on 100% cotton rag in an edition of 150. Size: 12 x 12 inches ea /30.5 x 30.5 cm

The silver version of 'Paris' is also a 3-color screenprint on 100% cotton rag in an edition of 100. Size: 24 x 18 inches /61 x 45.7 cm. This edition looks like a mashed up version of the other two prints.

We are big fans of Kinsey's work but we are not too keen on these new photographic screenprints, the colours as always are great; it's just we feel it's a little lazy to do a screen print of some photos of his paste-ups on the street! But as with all other Kinsey releases they are sure to sell out instantly.

The prints should be available later this afternoon on the BLK/MRKT Website

Jaybo Exhibition at StolenSpace

Opening tonight 11th March 2010 at StolenSpace Gallery is a new exhibition titled 'In The Back Of Real (Never Hide The Madness)', featuring the work of Berlin based artist Jaybo.

This from StolenSpaces website: Jaybo(1968) is a runaway, setting out and wandering along in a physical as well as in a creative sense. In his youth, he ran away from his house in southern France, settling in Berlin-Kreuzberg at the beginning of the 1980’s, where he busied himself as a graffiti writer, street actor and hip-hop musician. When he founded the streetwear label “Irie Daily” and the cultural magazine “Style” at the beginning of the 1990’s, his influence on Berlin’s youth culture and fashion scene could be clearly seen. Even today, urban subculture is the driving force behind his artistic activities.

The show opens tonight with a private view and will run at the gallery until the 28th March.

East London Van Graffiti

Saturday saw us trekking down to Whitechapel in East London to collect a package from the Post Office. On route with our camera in tow we stumbled on what can only be described as the Graff Van epicenter of London. Every van in the area was covered and they all seemed to be parked within a couple of streets of each other like some sort of Graff van convention. Roids, Horfe and a TOX03 tag! Anyway photos speak for themselves. See the full set after the jump!

D*Face and The Oscars - Part 02

Looks like D*Face was busy in LA during the week installing what look like skeletonised Oscar sculptures in the run up to the Academy Awards which take place today 7th March.

The pair of 7ft sculptures were installed in two locations in LA, one atop Runyon Canyon and another in the parking lot of Mel’s Drive-In Hollywood, which is close to where the Oscars are to be held. Both sculptures were accompanied by plaques with the following:

“Beauty is one snip away,” read the plaque near the Hollywood sign version.

“Beauty is skin deep,” on the one near Mel’s Drive-In.

NBC Los Angeles has an interview with D*Face about this project and his "Zombie Oscars" as they are now being refferred to . You can read the interview online here as well as seeing more photos.

Banksy Movie Hype!!

With the new movie "Exit Throught The Gift Shop" set to go on general release on the 5th March, looks like the Banksy hype machine is kicking into full swing.

Two weeks of invite only screenings at the Lambeth Palace in Leake Street, a 6 page spread in the The Sunday Times yesterday, an exclusive video clip for their online site and a specially designed cover and interview in the new edition of Time Out London set to drop 2nd March  {blogged here}. With all this high profile PR stuff it's good to see he has gone and done what he does best-  taking to the streets of West London to promote the movie in typical Banksy style.

It will be interesting to see if anything else pops up over the next few days in the runup to the release!
