Less and More
The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams
Photograph by Luke Hayes.
Not really a street art related post but a good show none the less. The exhibition entitled "Less Is More - The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams" opened on the 18th of November at The Design Museum here in London.
Dieter Rams was head of design at Braun, the German consumer electronics manufacturer, and emerged as one of the most influential industrial designers of the late 20th century by defining an elegant, legible, yet rigorous visual language for its products. The exhibition will showcase Rams’ landmark designs for Braun and furniture manufacturer Vitsœ, examine how Rams’ design ethos inspired Braun’s entire product range for over 40 years, and assess his lasting influence on today’s design landscape.
Top row: Dieter Rams and some of the products he designed for Braun in the 60's.
Bottom row: Johnathan Ive's work for Apple.
Dieter Rams Ten Principles of good design:
Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is long-lasting.
Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
Good design is environmentally friendly
The exhibition runs until the 07th March 2010.

Amelia's Anthology of Illustration
Launch Party
Amelia's Anthology of Illustration doesn't fit neatly into a pigeonhole....oh no. Like Amelia's Magazine, it's an idiosyncratic endeavour that shies away from the norms of mainstream publishing.
Who else would dare to publish a book that marries an imaginary future free of fossil fuels with an anthology of the best new illustrators working today? Creativity in the Climate of Change? Yup, that's what Amelia tackles in her first book. It's an Anthology of Illustration, but not as we know it.
The book will offer inspiration on many different levels - to aspiring illustrators, to working illustrators, to art directors and to those interested in ways in which we can imagine an alternative and sustainable future for our planet. Amelia's Anthology of Illustration will be a limited edition hardback and eminently collectible. Each copy will be signed and numbered by Amelia herself.
Beautifully presented and entirely ethical in production, the book is printed in the UK using environmentally responsible vegetable inks on FSC approved paper.
On the 8th of December 2009, Concrete Hermit will be presenting the launch of book at their gallery space in East London. To celebrate this joyous occasion they will be letting some of Amelia’s hand-picked, masters of illustration, daub the walls of the gallery with their fanatical responses to the ever-present topic of climate change and making a sustainable future for our planet. A cause most worthy of your attendance!

Alex Daw Solo Exhibition
Hang-Up and Wieden and Kennedy join forces for 'Cut Out and Keep' an exhibition featuring the work of the multi-talented contemporary artist Alex Daw at the agency’s new space ‘The Cole’ situated in The Old Truman Brewery in London’s Brick Lane area.
Alex Daw brings his warped view of the world of fashion, status and advertising via his ongoing series of compelling contemporary mementos of modern life. He utilises anything at his disposal - he cuts and paints on a number of surfaces. Culling fragments of pop culture, fashion and art history, Daws’ obsessive nature to critique and de-construct objects, results in cut up magazines, and paintings on canvas and glass pieces.
The resulting work is a series of sexy, glossy objects, at once mocking, mimicking and worshipping the cult society they are idolising. He is also satirising the clinical, surgical lengths to which a growing number of celebrities take their obsessive compulsion to alter their physical self.
There will be four very limited edition prints available for purchase which will be released at the exhibition. The exhibition will run until Sunday 29th November.

Well established but distinctly avant-garde these Artists share a vision of the modern world that is abstract, colourful, esoteric, cartoonish, surreal and challenging. Luzinterruptus
An Almost Ephimeral Autumn
We have been fans of Madrid based Luzinterruptus for some time and have been following their fantastic work on their blog. Luzinterruptus is an anonymous artistic group of three, who carry out urban interventions in public spaces using the light as a raw material and the dark as their canvas.
We can't believe we haven't posted about their work prior to this. There latest intervention is entitled "An Almost ephimeral Autumn" and was created in the Moratalaz district of Madrid on the 3rd of November over a three hour period.
For the installation An Almost ephimeral Autumn they lit 200 dry leaves and lifted them from the ground until it seems as if a truly soft breeze of light had made the Autumn fallen leaves raise into the air. The fantastic work was documented by photographer Gustavo Sanabria.
Head over to their website and check out some of their other beautiful light interventions.

Hunto At Rarekind Gallery
RareKind presents the first London solo show by Italian Graffiti artist, Hunto. Best known for his cubist influenced canvases and delicate line drawings, Hunto introduces a unique quality to the graffiti art scene, marrying non-conformist 20th century art characteristics to the equally non-conformist medium of graffiti art.
The London show, hosted by RareKind opens tonight 19th at the Rag Factory, is a culmination of his canvas, sketch, screen print and sculptural work, with a strong theme based around the human figure and that most beguiling of subjects, sex.
Born in Brindisi, South Italy in 1982, Hunto started his career as a graffiti artist in 1996 and explored many themes and painting genres. Massively inspired by the work of Picasso and Braque, he honed his style to give a retro twist to graffiti art and thus, his characters and designs became well known and loved on the streets of Italy.
Private view Thursday 19th November – RSVP bex@rarekind.co.uk
The artist will be painting live at the Rag Factory on Sunday 22nd November.

The Thousands Exhibition
We have been so busy recently we almost missed posting about the Thousands show which is opening tomorrow night and not Thursday as we originally thought.
The Thousands will see a RJ from Vandalog curating his first exhibition in the vast space that is The Village Underground in Shoreditch. The exhibition is set to feature a collection of original work by some of the top names in street art including Barry McGee, Faile, Banksy, KAWS, Shepard Fairey and Swoon.
“The Thousands” is an attempt to show the art world and the public that there are great works of art within the sphere of “street” and that these artists deserve a place in art history."RJ has been working flat out on the show all summer, liaising with private collectors to aquire works on loan for the show and he has also invited a number of artists to create new works specifically for the show. If all that wasn't enough to manage, RJ has partnered with Dragolab the Italian publishing company and put together an accompanying book “The Thousands: Painting Outside, Breaking In” which will be released at the show opening tomorrow. This is going to be a fantastic show, with a collection of works that you don't get to see everyday and certainly won't want to miss.
The exhibition opens it doors tomorrow with a private view, Wednesday November 18th: 6-10pm. After the preview the show will run until Sunday 22nd November.

HUSH Innocence Show
Hush hits London tonight with all new work for his solo show “Innocence”, at the Urban Angel Art Lounge on Red Church Street.
Using seemingly pure and innocent manga and anime characters, the alluring images of the female form in Hush’s work suggest otherwise. Japanese text on many pieces reveal a far darker undertone to the initially playful representations, which is lost in translation to the majority of us. In addition to demonstrating the use of the female form in contemporary art, these images show us how tagging and graf can place the work in a relevant time, and be a beautiful and accepted art form in different contexts.
Expect 4 Installation pieces, new paintings, works on paper, wood cubes & some limited edition prints. There is a buyers preview this evening but it's Strictly guest list only!

Fefe Talavera - Mama Quilla Print
The BLDG will be releasing their first print with phenom Brazilian street artist turned fine artist, Fefe Talavera. This piece is largely inspired by Incan culture. Fefe describes the piece as follows:
"The Incas had a myth concerning lunar eclipses that is fairly common among ancient peoples. In these stories the Moon is always attacked by some force or creature that manages to swallow it, only to be defeated in the end by some big-shot hero. For the Incas, this creature was the snake or puma, and the Moon itself was a goddess known as Mama Quilla. Analogous to her solar husband Inti, Mama Quilla was portrayed as a silver disk with a human face. She ruled over calendars and the measurement of time, and kept protective watch over married women."Fefe's work has been displayed worldwide: Moscow, Buenos Aires, New York, Seville, Berlin, Los Angeles, Mexico DF, Vienna, Amsterdam; including the standout Propeace Exhibit in Lille, France and a blow-up solo show in Madrid at Subaquatica. Exhbiting along side of the world's finest artists: Invader, Doze Green, Labrona, Imminent Disaster and more.
This print is entitled, "Mama Quilla" It is a 22"x30", 4 color hand pulled screen print with Metallic Silver. It's an edition of 75 on 100% Cotton Rag Stonehenge paper with two deckled edges. It goes on sale on the BLDGrefuge website at 11a.m. (US EST) on Thursday, Nov. 12th for $100.

Nick Walker’s Morning After series
New Print from Nick Walker set to drop soon, this from Black Rat Press:
Black Rat Press is delighted to be publishing the latest edition from Nick Walker’s Morning After Series. TMA Moscow is a 16 colour hand pulled screenprint and is our favourite TMA print to date. From past releases we know that the demand for this series of prints is extremely high and that whichever way we release it some people will be disappointed. Nick has decided, and we agree, that the fairest way to do this release is via a lottery style system. This allows for people in different parts of the world and those not available to queue or be near a computer at a specific time to have an equal chance. Winners will be picked at random and receive an email offering them the opportunity to buy a print. If anyone decides not to take the print or does not reply within 24 hours of us sending the email offer we will draw another name at random.TMA Moscow will be a 16 colour screenprint, signed and numbered from the edition of 150. The price will be £550. To enter the lottery please email in with the subject TMA Moscow Lottery and your name and address to info@blackratpress.com The draw will take place on November 11th and winners will be notified the same day.Good luck!
Chloe Early
Clouded Apollo At StolenSpace
In her paintings Chloe Early creates a fantastical landscape, an urban utopia where strange and wonderful things happen. For this exhibition 'Clouded Apollo', she has referenced a variety of images and contexts; a female figure twists and turns through time, suspended in an interior world of opulence and beauty, echos of patterns and pillars, glass roofs, chandeliers and roses. Outside we see far away skylines, buildings rising and falling, destruction and the prescient image of destruction; a tank.
The actions of the aerial performer strike a balance between performance and introspection as the figures defy gravity in an obvious act of showmanship but ultimately remain self contained and unaware of the viewer. Darker and more sombre these paintings are a development away from her recent carnival theme to a dark yet beautiful world.
Early's works are typically oil paintings on metal or canvas, and for this show there are also pieces in oil on perspex. The use of oil on a these surfaces means the light plays across the surface in an almost etheral way, which together with the layering of landscapes, objects and figures creates a mutli -dimensional world; the viewer has the sense of catching glimpses of this other world as we are passing by.
Private View 5 November - The show runs until 29 November

Geneviève Gauckler
Digitally Isolated Show
For Digitally Isolated, Parisian illustrator and designer Geneviéve Gauckler has disconnected herself from the daily stream of images, words and information that flood our daily lives in an effort to return to more traditional techniques of drawing, painting and hand-screenprinting. Gauckler presents the character-based composition style for which she is best known, but reduces the result to one or two characters, a few words and basic colours.
“It’s like a challenge to create new artworks by following these rules, these constraints. It’s like children playing and trying to come up with a new story, a new game by always using the same toys. In a way, I’m trying to become more and more simple, but I wouldn’t dare to use the word ‘minimalist’, because it’s related to art and I’m not really connected to the art world – my work is closer to illustration and decoration."
The exhibition featurse limited-edition silkscreened prints and acrylic paintings on canvas, exclusively to Kemistry Gallery, and available in the gallery or at our online shop from 6 November.Kemistry Gallery | 43 Charlotte Road | London | EC2A 3PD

Represent Exhibition
Portraiture goes to the heart of how we relate to other people. When we look into someone’s eyes, we try to see what they really think, what we think we have in common and how we can understand them...
Represent brings together a group of contemporary artists whose work deals with exactly these issues. Each artist has strived to develop their own unique approach to portraiture, a field of art once reserved for those who were important or rich enough to afford it, but now treated as a means for contemporary artists to explore the diverse issues that affect today’s fragmented society. Each artist paints portraits as a kind of social activity, to try to understand that other person and in the process to make their own mark in the social network.
A fund raising exhibition in aid of the S.H.P art projects, helping to promote social inclusion in London through the creative arts. The show has a fantastic line up of artists including: GAVIN NOLAN / SWOON / GUY DENNING / MATT SMALL / YUKO NASU / ELBOWTOE / ROB SAMPLE / BEST EVER / ZACH WALSH / PETER MICHEAL / LABRONA / DAVID WALKER / DALE GRIMSHAW / JOHNATHAN DARBY / GEORGE M CLARK / CHRISTOPHER ROSS / CASE / LEON BILLING

Best Ever UKadapta Interview
The November issue of online magazine UKADAPTA has just dropped. The new issue features a great interview with street/graffiti artists Best Ever.
Best Ever have an anatomical and surgical way of looking at human figures. Their concepts cover death and disease and how fragile the human body is and how weak we all are as forms. The duo come from graffiti backgrounds with both being equally proficient in the style of photorealism. This allows their collaborative efforts to seem effortless, as they seem to be able to work on one canvas, sharing one mind between them.
