TAKASHI MURAKAMI LONDON SHOW

Here's one for the diaries next month and one we certainly won't be missing.

Gagosian Gallery announces an exhibition of new paintings by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.

Beneath its bright and playful appearance, Murakami's art deftly challenges the established dichotomies of high art and popular culture, East and West, present and past, life and death, humor and gravity, skepticism and belief. Visually, his work merges the dystopic worlds of popular animé and manga cartoons with the ultra-refined techniques of traditional Nihonga painting.

The show will run from FEBRUARY 10th until APRIL 9th

Gasosian Gallery | 17-19 Davies Street | London

C215 BACK IN LONDON

I see from Romanywg's flickr that french Stencil artist C215 is back in London and has been hitting the streets of East London again with some new work.

Pictured above is some work he painted in Cargo earlier in the week. Also in the Cargo's courtyard is some new work from Bruno Leyval. Check Romanywg's flickr who has photographed the artists at work in Cargo.

Photo: Romanywg

I also came across this great short film from AfroBreak, documenting C215's travels to Brazil last year, not sure when the video was posted but I hadn't seen it before.

The film documents C215's travels into the favelas as he finds spots to paint on the streets. It follows him into the homes of some of the locals where he decorates their walls with his work and also shows him giving a master class to the local Kids on how to cut a stencil.

Brad Downey London Exhibition

Brad Downey Lamposts
Stolen Space Gallery presents Brad Downey in the Dray Walk Gallery. The exhibition entitled ‘An Honest Thief’ opens on Thursday 29th January and will run until Sunday 8th February.

Subtle, comic and very often provocative, Downey aims to surprise the viewer, by illuminating how public, private property, urban space and personal experience overlap in an era of increasing privatization.

Visit Brad's website to see more of his street work or check out this video interview below by German based Hobnox from June of last year.

Please note, only the intro of the video is in German, the rest of the interview with Brad is in English.

Objectified Documentary

Above is a peek at the upcoming feature-length independent documentary "Objectified", by Gary Hustwit, the director of "Helvetica".

"Objectified is a documentary about industrial design; it’s about the manufactured objects we surround ourselves with, and the people who make them.On an average day, each of us uses hundreds of objects. (Don’t believe it? Start counting: alarm clock, light switch, faucet, shampoo bottle, toothbrush, razor…) Who makes all these things, and why do they look and feel the way they do? All of these objects are “designed,” but how can good design make them, and our lives, better?"   Gary Hustwit

The trailer features the voices of Jonathan Ive, Andrew Blauvelt, Marc Newson, and Karim Rashid. The song is "I Like Van Halen Because My Sister Says They Are Cool" by El Ten Eleven.

Objectified will premiere at film festivals and events worldwide starting this March, more info here: Objectified

NOUS VOUS SHOW @ JAGUAR SHOES

NOUS VOUS EXHIBITION LONDONDream Bags, Jaguar Shoes London will kick off the new year with an exhibition featuring work from the illustration collective Nous Vous.

Nous vous is a Creative Studio made up of Nicolas Burrows, Jay Cover, William Edmonds and Tom Hudson. They originally came together in 2006 to form a social 'drawing club', but have since evolved into other things. They exhibit both as individual artists and as a group, while working together as designers and illustrators on commercial projects. They still site that making the work together is the most important element in their practice.

'BIG FIRE' is an exhibition of new work, exploring the four Nous Vous artists' individually and as a group. This exhaustive archive of the spewn-out contents of four brains repeats, copies, reworks, parodies, emulates, trashes and pokes fun at itself through the myriad images on display.

There is a private view at the bar, opening on Thursday 22nd January, 7pm till late. The exhibition will run until Sunday 1st March.
