Forgot to blog this a few weeks ago and just came across them again. Got a package in the post with some great zines from Scottish artist/illustrator Rue Five.Rue Five was in London last month and painted at the second Cans Festival with fellow Scottish artist Elph. You can see the Can's work here.
The package I got, contained two zines, one which was produced by Analogue Books as part of their Running Amok self published series of zines; the other a self published zine titled "Something's Wrong Zine". Both zine are now sold out but I suggest checking his website and online shop on a regular basis for new zines.

DAVE THE CHIMP X VANS
Having already featured on our blog twice in the last week with not one but two print releases, it doesn't surprise us that we are blogging about Dave The Chimp once again. Not one to sit around, Dave is back in London tonight for the launch of his newest project. With a long skateboard history it seem logical for him to do a collaborative shoe for Vans and tonight at Cargo will see the launch of the "Wake Up" shoe. A white leather, printed canvas Mid School model, with sleepy tattooed toes on the insole, and a crystal clear waffle sole, through which you can see the toes and features Chimp's ambigram signature (flip it upside down and it still reads the same!).
Size? will sell an exclusive boxed version of the shoes featuring a Hessen Mob skate deck, two Vans tees and a Dave the Chimp fanzine/ poster.
The launch will kick off at 8pm tonight at Cargo with live music from Robots in Disguise and Le Couteau Jaune. Plus Stool Pigeon DJ's and live art from Dave the Chimp
FREE ENTRY AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

BEN FROST - CRAPITALISM

"My relationship with popular culture is a love/hate affair. I always feel like vomiting when I'm in the supermarket - but not until I've scoured the brightly lit aisles and fondled the colourful packaging and read each and every perky slogan that whispers seductively to me. This is how the world of consumerism works, and no matter how much sugar is on top, every mouthful leaves a bad taste in our mouths. This is Crapitalism."Ben Frost
Crapitalism will feature a selection of new paintings, prints and a video installation as Sydney artist Ben Frost explores the darker side of consumerism in his apocalyptic hyper-pop paintings in his first UK solo show.
Bold, distinctive, confronting, witty and completely original Ben uses the tricks and techniques of the advertising industry, but not in order to sell hamburgers. Using the symbols and icons of the media moguls, Ben re-calibrates them anew, and turns them against the propaganda industry.
The recently launched "No Walls Gallery" are hosting the show and are taking over the Dray Walk space within the Truman Brewery, with the opening night and preview on Thursday the 25th of September.
Opening night: 25th September from 6.00pm
The exhibition will run from 26th-30th September 2008

MAIL ORDER MONSTERS LONDON

Max Wigram Gallery announces a group exhibition curated by Kathy Grayson. Mail Order Monsters brings to London, for the first time, a group of young American artists.
Tapping into an underground music and graffiti vibe the selection of works in the show also finds reference in computer-programme aesthetics. Taking its title from a 1980s videogame (which allowed you to build your own monster) the show suggests an approach to the figuration in contemporary art practice which brings together fictional fantasy with the post-human figure of techno-dystopia, depicting the body as broken, decaying, uncanny and monstrous.
This exhibition was previously hosted by Peres Projects, Berlin; Deitch Projects, New York; and Andreas Melas, Athens.
Featuring: Jules de Balincourt, Mat Brinkman, Ry Fyan, Tomoo Gokita, Joe Grillo , Evan Gruzis, Ben Jones, Misaki Kawai, Eddie Martinez, Taylor Mckimens, Takeshi Murata, Anders Oinonen, Aurel Schmidt , Francine Spiegel, Dennis Tyfu and Jaimie Warren

GNOME PICTURES
Headed down yesterday to Soho square on my lunch break to watch all the people scrambling around soho square looking in the trees and bins for the Gnomes!! Was well funny. Bumped into my mate Goldtooth and Pure Evil and got to see the army of Gnomes before they were put out on the square.
As the Firetrap people were running late with the gnome hunt and crowds of people had gathered in soho square there was no way they were gonna be able to drop them in the square with out being seen. It was decided they would make a dash with the gnomes - I along with the others in the club were given 2 each and we all legged it to soho square with cameras following. I was almost floored by three ladies attempting to grab the gnomes from my arms!! All good fun and made for an interesting lunch. Here are a few photos of the Gnones before the madness.

GOING... GOING... GNOME!
Today- Tuesday (Sept 16th) 30 limited edition artworks by artists PURE EVIL, MYSTERIOUS AL, PMH, NICKY CARVELL, GOLDTOOTH & SUPERSTEVE will appear in & around London's Soho Square.
Get yourself along to Soho and if you find one of them, not only do you get to keep it but it will also guarantee you free VIP entry to the SUPERSUPER London Fashion Week Party in association with Firetrap later this evening at Punk on Soho Street.
What you'll be looking for are thirty ceramic gnomes (yes, gnomes), each one is 30cm high, and they will be placed in amusing, relatively easy-to-find spots around Soho Square, London W1.
Each of the artists listed below worked on ten gnomes each, making this a very limited edition project. The gnome character, known as 'Deadly', is the Firetrap mascot and has been reworked in each artist's inimitable style.
PURE EVIL: Inspired by skateboard culture and a ten year sojourn in California, Pure Evil picked up a spray can and began painting weird fanged bunnies virtually everywhere. Pure Evil is now launching his vision of darkness on an unsuspecting world. Beware.
MYSTERIOUS AL: Trained as a fine artist, Mysterious Al now uses monsters, mutants and sub-human characters in a unique form of illustration. He has exhibited across the globe and has worked with diverse clients including The Big Issue, Orange and The Scratch Perverts.
PMH: With solo shows including Peel Slowly And See and Minor Threat, PMH has worked with the label Stick It, and created windows for Lee. His work incorporates photographs, zines, collages, drawing and anything else he can get his hands on.
NICKY CARVELL: Super hot new 'post pop' artist whose work is the dark side of dayglo, mixing pop icons (Kurt Cobain,East 17,Courtney Love) with colourful horror. Most recently shown in the 'Mash-Ups' show curated by Stuart Semple, and '3AM Eternal' at the Louise T Blouin Foundation, London.
GOLDTOOTH: Michael Mantiss work captures the capricious spirit of the East End art scene. Founder of mayhem driven design duo Goldtooth he has been the focus of numerous shows.
SUPERSTEVE: Artist, Founder & Creative Director of SUPERSUPER Magazine and curator (most recently of 3AM ETERNAL show with artists including Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans, Mark Leckey and Julie Verhoeven).
The gnome hunt kicks off at 1pm in Soho Square, don't miss it.

MR JAGO AT STOLEN SPACE GALLERY

StolenSpace present the 1st London solo show by artist Mr Jago. This exhibition will showcase new work on Canvas, Silk, wood & installations, as well as the release of 2 new limited edition screen prints.
‘I see figures & form everywhere, in water, carpet patterns, shadows, clouds, everything is an abstract character and they are free’ says Jago.‘Of all weather phenomena, I find clouds the most fascinating, from the silky filaments of high altitude cirrus to the towering, threatening mass of storm-bearing cumulonimbus, clouds are as varied as the new work itself. I love cloud watching, from no where the fluffy mass morphing shapes from a cunning fox with whispy ears to familiar faces ’.
Apparent in Mr Jago’s work is its loose lines and organic flow; he describes his work as ‘itchy’ and ‘dynamic’, with heavy movement and life, always searching for a new arrangement of lines. Robotic characters, and multi-layered landscapes feature heavily. The free flowing strokes and organic colours in Mr Jago’s paintings explore the ideas of space and depth in the landscapes and whilst the fast lines in his work attempt to make subject seem alive and animated. Mr Jago seems to have the ability to see a different world amongst the very mundane. These elements a very much reflective in this new body of work, and with this a looser, more instinctive style. This evolution has seen the early ‘Scrawl Collective’ scratchy style through to these more free flowing, abstract and loose paintings.
The show opens to the public on the 12th of September and continues through to the 28th of September.

RUNWAY EXHIBITION
The Maverik Showrooms presents a new exhibition this week titled "Runway". Runway is an exhibition of capricious, large scale drawings and prints by Gillian Westgate that celebrate aero-flights and fantasy.
The series of work incorporates ink, painting, collage, printmaking and film, taking the iconography of aeroplanes as its central theme. The exhibition harks back to a time when flying was sexy and glamorous, offering access to exoticism and pleasures unknown. Long before cheap seats and carbon offsetting led to air travel’s descent from glory in the popular imagination, it was daring, new and full of possibilities.
