SLINKACHU @ COSH

GROUND ZERO: Little People in the City is the first solo show from Slinkachu featuring all new works at Cosh Gallery, Soho. Slinkachu has taken street art to a new scale, painstakingly hand-painting tiny characters that live in a world that’s too small for us to always notice beneath our feet. His street installations are constructed in all sorts of public spaces, the portrayal of little lives that mirror our own. Working in miniature opens up the city landscapes in unexpected ways and this is explored in Ground Zero where he literally brings you down to a new level.

Ground Zero is both street art installations and photography. The two go hand in hand with the subsequent photograph uncovering his hidden world. The show depicts the little fears and anxieties of city life and the general feeling of being alone or insignificant in a large city. While the scenes reflect the loneliness and melancholy of urban life there is always an underlying sense of humour and feeling of empathy.

NEW SWOON PRINT

To celebrate the launch of Swoon's fleet of ships on the Hudson river, Paper Monster has released a beautiful new Swoon print "Switchback Sisters". All proceeds from this print will go to help those involved in the traveling exhibition "Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea" which runs from August 15th through September 7th.

Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea is a flotilla of seven intricately hand crafted vessels that will navigate the stretch of the Hudson River between Troy and the New York harbor this August 15th - September 7th. Imagined as a hybrid between boats and bits of land mass broken off and headed out to sea, the Switchback vessels will make stops in towns along the river bringing performances and music. Over the course of three weeks they will make their way toward their home port - an invented landscape tucked into a niche along the East River in Long Island City, Queens. More info on the project here.

Above is a detailed section of the print which is 11 x 32 Inches and silkscreen Ink and Stain on Archival Paper. See the full print image here

LITTLE PEOPLE IN THE CITY BOOK

Mixing sharp humour with a delicious edge of melancholy, Little People in the City brings together the collected photographs of Slinkachu, a street-artist who for several years has been leaving little hand-painted people in the bustling city to fend for themselves, waiting to be discovered. . .

‘Oddly enough, even when you know they are just hand-painted figurines, you can’t help but feel that their plights convey something of our own fears about being lost and vulnerable in a big, bad city.’ The Times

The book is due out on the 5th of September with a book launch event on Sunday 31st August in London. There will also be "The Little People Treasure hunt" where Slinkachu will be placing four installations at various locations around London and it is up to YOU to track them down and find them.

The hunt will start at his upcoming show at Cosh Gallery on Berwick Street where you can pick up the clues. The first person or team to spot all four installations and get to the finish line at the Truman Brewery Bar on Brick Lane will win a signed print from the show. There is also a special prize for the best photography of the installations, with a flickr page set up here for you to upload to, so bring your cameras!

After the hunt, there will be music and drinks at the Truman Brewery Bar and the chance to buy the book a full 5 days before it arrives in shops (woopie!). More info on the book and the hunt can be found here.

Kemistry Gallery is an independent design gallery dedicated to exhibiting the work of outstanding designers both past, present and upcoming. Kemistry Gallery is the only independent gallery doing so in the UK at the present time; it exists as a one-off, having built up a far-reaching and highly respected reputation for showcasing many talented designers and promoting design to a wider audience. They aim to make design accessible to an audience that might otherwise overlook or undervalue its importance next to disciplines such as fine art or photography. Kemistry Gallery strongly believes that good design in years to come will be both valued and valuable to the public and collectors alike.
