CANCER SELL AUCTION TONIGHT

Over 100 street artists from around the world have donated their work to the London based ‘Cancer Sell’ exhibition with opens tonight 31 July. The exhibition has been put together by street artist Kelly Grimble of Beautifully Urban to raise funds for Cancer Research and Florence Nightingale Hospice.

The exhibition is of particular personal significance for Kelly as her mother died from breast cancer in 2007, ‘I wanted to give something back, to thank the incredible people that looked after my mum, as well as raise funds for research into a disease that affects absolutely everyone,’ says Kelly. ‘The street artist community is a close knit one and I have been overwhelmed by the phenomenal response, generosity and kindness of the artists.’

The exhibition will showcase work from new street artists, many exhibiting for the first time, alongside established names. As well as spray paint based art, artists have contributed photography, sculpture and vinyl for free. All the work will be available for purchase and all proceeds will be donated to cancer charities or to a charity nominated by the artist.

The exhibition runs for one day, 31st July 2008 at 98 Leonard Street, a disused shop in Shoreditch that will be transformed into a space for the exhibition.

This looks set to be a fantastic evening for a great cause and definitely not to be missed if you are in London this evening and free.

TML STAR EXHIBITION

A new exhibition opened at The New Cross Gallery featuring new works from the TML Stars. The TML Stars are a three man art collective who have been producing work together in their distinctive style since 2000. Each member brings different ethics and motivation to the work, but their common goal is just to create.

With all preconceptions thrown out the window they have evolved from the confines of traditional graffiti art and over the years have experimented with a host of different mediums. The street is their primary, but by no means exclusive canvas. They use a variety of ways to showcase their ideas, ranging from the more obvious sticker art and murals to installations in plastic wood and plaster. Their totemic images evoke a phratric similarity, each piece is different from the last yet strongly connected. The body of work on show emphasises their freedom to work as individual artists, while still keeping at the core of their work the strong identity and ethos of the TML Stars.

CANCER SELL GRAFFITI WALK

This Sunday 13th July will see the third and final Cancer Sell Graffiti Walking Tour. HowAboutNo and NoLionsInEngland will be organising a walking Graffiti Tour around the streets of East London for the Cancer Sell Charity, taking in Shoreditch, Old Street and the Brick Lane areas. The tour kicks off on Sunday at 2.30. Each tour starts from Old Street Tube station, Exit 1.

They plan to guide a group of 20 or so people up and down the streets providing a commentary on the art there and possibly art that used to be there – depending on whether the council buffer squads have been particularly vigilant the night before. They hope to describe some of the different approaches to getting up used by different artists and describe from second hand knowledge some of the issues faced by graffiti artists in going about the clandestine activities.

The event costs £5 and 100% of that goes to Cancer Sell.
A good cause and you get to see some fantastic work. Not to be missed.

THE ART OF STEPHAN DOITSCHINOFF

We have been big fans of Stephan's work for a number of years and are excited to see he will be releasing a book in early september. Some of you may know Stephan's work which he has created under his graffiti alias Calma. This book with the same name documents the emblematic and spiritual paintings and murals that the Brazilian painter has emblazoned on houses, churches and walls in rural villages in his South American homeland.

"Calma" introduces the visual language of Brazilian painter and illustrator Stephan Doitschinoff, who finds his creative cadence in the realm between authentic urban art and rural spirituality. The title Calma is not only Stephan Doitschinoff‘s alias as a graffiti writer, but also the abbreviation of “con alma” (c’alma) in Latin, meaning “with soul”. His emblematic metaphoric imagery feeds off Afro-Brazilian folklore, pagan and alchemistic symbolism and contemporary pop culture. Doitschinoff composes spectacular murals and applies his extraordinary talent to emblazon houses, churches and walls in rural cities in his South American homeland.

For the first time, Calma documents his artistic journey through these rustic areas and presents the complete visual pandemonium of a young urban artist who creates powerful figurative worlds. His colourful murals and black and white drawings are a sensation internationally and have been shown in galleries and museums around the world.

The book is available on pre-order from amazon here

Os Gemeos - Too Far Too Close

Os Gemeos (pronounced "ose zhe'-mee-ose.") are two artists from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo were born in 1974, identical twin brothers whose pseudonym, Os Gemeos, translates to "the twins" in Portuguese. In addition to their incredible works created on the streets of Sao Paulo, the twins have in recent years exhibited their art in museums all over the world.

Too Far Too Close is the brothers second solo exhibition at Deitch Projects in New York. The gallery has been transformed into a fantastical cityscape with houses, doors, and passageways, all brought to life with their signature style of imagery. Building upon a group of artworks created for the Museum Het Domein in the Netherlands, this show features new paintings, sculpture, and installation bringing all the magical moments of their work together in one tightly knit dream world of an exhibition.

The show opened in New York on the 28th June, if like us you can't make the show, check out Mikeion's flickr who captured the show on the opening night. View the full set from the show here.

More of Less

East London design shop and gallery Concrete Hermit have updated their online website and it now features an online shop and community network where you can join in.

Concrete Hermit also have a new exhibition open in their gallery space this Thursday 3rd July. The show will feature new work from two young london based artists. Kate McMorrine is an artist from the Isle of Skye, a tiny island just off the coast of Scotland where she “learned to play magical instruments and see colors no other can ever see”. She now lives in London, speaks in a dull monotone Scottish accent and eats a lot of meat. She hates hippies, does not trust people with thin teeth, and likes fighting on Saturday nights. She also makes creepy weird art. Alec Strang is a design & illustrator based in London studying Illustration at the London College of Communication. Alec’s drawings focus on the darker aspects of modern youth culture using mostly black and white figurative pen and ink drawings.

The show opens 3rd July 2008 and runs for a month until the 3rd August.
