HANG-UP GOES LIVE

New website Hang –Up opens it virtual doors and goes live at midday today Tuesday 24th June. Hang-Up will be a constantly renewing on-line gallery selling highly collectable limited editions and originals from a cross section of today’s most sought-after young urban artists. Some are already very established, some less so, but all have one thing in common: the quality of their work is exceptional. Hang-Up will deal in rare secondary market works from a range of urban artists which includes Antony Micallef, Adam Neate, Banksy, Michael de Feo, Bast, JR, Dain, Faile, Blu, and SPQR.

In addition over the coming months Hang-Up will be releasing fresh new art from a selection of young and talented emerging artists with works exclusive to Hang-Up. There are some exciting names already in the mix including uber talented Bristol
artist and illustrator Tom Hine who recently produced a huge work on on the side of a rickshaw workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal.

By definition urban art is an ephemeral art form, often vanishing from the streets as fast as it appears. In keeping with this distinctive culture Hang-Up will be organising guerrilla exhibitions which will pop up around London in a variety of spaces where selected works will be displayed for live viewing for limited periods.

Go check it out here.

3D United Kingdoms PRINT

New print from 3D and published by Yo! What Happened to Peace?. This powerful print is a four color serigraph printed on 100% cotton, natural color paper. Its design is adapted from a stencil painting originally created for a Tony Blair article in Britain's New Statesman magazine. The artist calls it "the bastard flag child of Britain's Iraq..."

The print measures 19.5"x25"(49.5x63.5cm) and is an edition of 120. Each print is signed, numbered and is priced at $200.

3D's actual name is Robert Del Naja. He was born and still resides in the United Kingdon and is a founding member of the trip-hop band, Massive attack. Though he is commonly known for his work with the group, he is also just as popular in the art scene as a talented graffiti and street artist. In the visual art realm, his works often carry strong political themes as he tends to be inspired by global government situations and environmental urgencies.. His artwork has been featured in magazines, on album covers and included in a variety of books.

Yo! What Happened to Peace? is a traveling peace and anti-war poster exhibition. It began in 2003 with 14 prints with an opening hosted by Cross World Connections in Tokyo as a response to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The exhibition is committed to highlighting the beauty of hand-crafted printmaking techniques as a method of visual protest, the show has traveled the globe continuously adding new artists and artwork.

Ronzo — Stolen Space Gallery

‘DISSTOPIA’, is Ronzo’s first UK solo show, and opens at the StolenSpace Gallery on the 20th June with a private view tonight the 19th June.

The show will feature a new body of work based on visions of an apocalyptic future set in the wastelands of what is once believed to have been the city of London. The new paintings, collages and drawings examine not only the ruins of the architectural landscape as we know it, but focus on the human aspect of life in a society, the day after. Avoiding all the common clichés usually attached to this subject, Ronzo’s unique figures, characters and life forms tell their own stories. The little narratives, sometimes humorous, sometimes sad take us to very strangely familiar places. The concept of the show plays with our fears and hopes of an uncertain, not to distant future.

Ronzo’s creations are previously unseen and unlike any other. It is a post-graffiti future vision of a vandal from a street level perspective. The work is a fusion of the figurative and abstract. Some of the works are three-dimensional mixed-media collages using objects and surfaces taken directly from the street and affixed to the painting itself. In some parts Ronzo’s paintings are precise, technical and detailed while in others they are kept loose and seem almost unfinished. This allows the viewer room for interpretation and provides the opportunity for them to form their own opinion. The drawings are generated in a spontaneous and rough manner, as the artist describes: “Although there is always a general idea in place before I start a drawing, the outcome is ever so uncertain. When the pen hits the surface an intuitive journey begins.”

The show aims to stimulate as well as to reflect and sharpen our view of today’s society.

The show runs until 06th of July

GRAFFITI TOUR IN AID OF CANCER SELL

Photobucket HowAboutNo and NoLionsInEngland are organising another series of Graffiti Tours around the streets of East London for the Cancer Sell Charity, taking in Shoreditch, Old Street and the Brick Lane areas. The next tour kicks off tomorrow evening the 18th June at 6.30. Each tour starts from Old Street Tube station, Exit 1.

They plan to guide a group of 20 or so people up and down the streets
providing a commentary on the art there and possibly art that used to be
there – depending on whether the council buffer squads have been
particularly vigilant the night before. They hope to describe some of the
different approaches to getting up used by different artists and describe
from second hand knowledge some of the issues faced by graffiti artists in
going about the clandestine activities.

Cost will be £5 per person, all of which goes to Cancer Sell fundraiser.
A good cause and you get to see some fantastic work. Not to be missed.

Thieves Ladder Exhibition

Opening tonight Thursday 12 June at Black Rat Press gallery, a new installation show featuring the work of three talented artists. Chris Stain, Ponchoand Armsrock.

Armsrock was born in Copenhagen, Denmark but now lives elsewhere in Europe. He creates life-sized portraits of his fellow citizens in an attempt to retell some of the stories the city holds. He interacts with the streets by placing these portraits (each an intriciate original drawing) back in the environment from where they came. A project he sees sets of open sketch books.

Chris Stain is an established American stencil artist who sees his work as a direct reflection of the people, neighbourhoods and struggles that are swept along with the every day lives of the common American. With these works he hopes to capture and convey the importance of the forgotten, marginalised and disinherited individuals of society.

Poncho hails from the Chiapas in South East Mexico and is an artist whose work similarly seeks to highlight the unsung, powerless and dispossesed members of society. This time those of his native Mexico. Poncho works in stencils and intricate cut-outs and exhibited. Last year he and Swoon exhibited a show about the gulf between Mexico and the US at Mu in Holland.

CHET ZAR EXHIBITION

If anyone is familiar with monsters, it is American artist Chet Zar. He explores them every day. They are part of his life, both professional and private. As a designer, special effects make-up artist, sculptor, and 3D animator for major Hollywood studios and rock bands such as Tool, he sketches, creates and builds them on a day to day basis – if you know the movies Hellboy, The X-Men, or The Ring, you have seen his creatures come alive. As a painter, Zar portrays them as they are: ugly. When you look at Chet Zar’s paintings, you will realize an inescapable truth: We are the monsters.

Friday 13th will see his UK solo show "Ugly American" open at Strychnin Gallery in London. There will also a limited edition catalog featuring works from the "Ugly American" exhibition. You can see a preview of the catalog and order here.

Strychnin Gallery | 65 Hanbury Street | London E1

On Saturday, June 14th, Chet Zar will be signing the "Ugly American" catalogue that accompanies the exhibition at Orbital Comics & Collectibles. Between 3 and 5 pm, the artist will be at 148 Charing Cross Road in London - the first twenty copies will be given away for free, so come early! See the Orbital website for more details.

EARLY GRIFFIN PRESS PRINTS

Early Griffin Press drop their third series of screen prints - by French, Rachel Cattle and Tom Gauld.

French's 3-colour 'Boar Tree' characteristically marries amazingly detailed line-work with a slightly twisted subject. Rachel is best known for her beautiful pencil drawings, so simple and yet suggesting a darker story unfolding. Her axe is one colour print, a graphite/grey. Tom Gauld's 'Gigantic Robot' is a fantastically huge, classic Tom Gauld robot, his gorgeous hand-drawn lines in black on top of silver.

Early Griffin works closely with invited artists to produce screen prints in limited editions of 50, with 3 artists in each series. Series one artists are Nigel Peake, Supermundane and Zakee Shariff, series two are Holly Wales, Neasden Control Centre and Robert Hanson. Each edition is printed by Early Griffin Press by hand and then individually approved by the artist.

They also donate 10% of the profits of each edition to a charity of the artists choice.

THE NEW DUTCH MASTER - DELTA

The first UK solo exhibition by the pioneer of the European graffiti movement, DELTA, at the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms opens this week in London. DELTA is renowned for his complex three dimensional styles and visually spectacular, architecturally structured lettering.

This much awaited exhibition of DELTA' s latest work will be a showcase of the Dutch master's graphic and architecturally inspired works, including new paintings, 3D constructivist pieces and complex collages.

Boris Tellegen, aka DELTA, is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist from Amsterdam who skilfully experiments with a variety of mediums in order to create his amazingly intricate paintings, prints, 3D sculptures, video works and installations. His work reminds the old Utopists and Constructivists and can be seen as portraits of industrial architecture.

The first DELTA tag appeared on the streets in 1984: through the years this Netherlands based artist has developed a complex and unique style that resembles isometric plans and plays with ideas of architecture and high tech futuristic vehicles. DELTA introduces an alien and idiosyncratic aesthetic into graffiti art that escapes the common logo-like word IDs. He has influenced writers all over the world for decades with his 3D letter style.

The show opens to the public June 6th and runs until the 28th 2008.

Accompanying the exhibition will be a 42 page hard back catalogue with over 60 full colour illustrations and inlcuding an essay by KODWO ESHUN. The catalogue will be available from the gallery from June 6th.

DELTA will bein the gallery between 12 - 1.00 on Saturday June 7th to sign catalogues.
