Artist's Rifles Requiem

A solo show by Charles Krafft
Thursday 20th September, 6.30pm - 9.30pm
Seattle artist Charles Krafft utilizes the traditional techniques and materials of decorative Delft ceramic painting to explore the sometimes-Orwellian realities of our times. Images of natural and socio-political catastrophes decorate his ceramic objects. In addition to ironic commemorative plates and plaques, Krafft makes porcelain weapons and ammunition. "Contemporary art should be relevant to our lives and experiences," Krafft has said. "The time we live in produces curious and splendid souvenirs of the events we live through."

WE ARE BUILD

We are big fans of the design work of Michael C Place aka BUILD and we see they have a shiny new website featuring some of their recent work. Build also have a show opening here in London this week which will run as part of the Brompton Design District hub at London Design Festival 2007.
The On/Off (and everything in-between) exhibition was curatored by Maxalot (Barcelona/Amsterdam) who invited Build, to collaborate with industrial architects Commonwealth (New York), for a 2D-3D face-off using cutting edge graphic software versus computer-numerically-controlled industrial design technology. The exhibition combines printed graphics by Build, with industrial 3D deconstructions by Commonwealth in a series of unique objets d’art. Printed vectors bleed into 3-dimensional surfaces as projected lines etched into the Corian® frames which house them.
On/Off (and everything in-between) at:
5 Cromwell Place | South Kensington | London SW7 2JB

HAND JOB

In this digital age of computer-generated graphics and typography, it's refreshing to find typographers who still believe in working by hand. No longer relegated to designer's sketchbooks, hand-drawn type has emerged from the underground as a dynamic vehicle for visual communication—from magazine, book, and album covers to movie credits . As the practice and appreciation of hand-drawn type grows, it's time to celebrate the work of those typographers whose every letterform is a work of art.
Hand Job collects groundbreaking work from fifty of today's most talented typographers who draw by hand. Graphic designer and hand typographer Michael Perry selects work representing the full spectrum of design methods and styles. Each hand-drawn work is entirely shaped by the artist's unique process—every one a carefully executed composition enhanced by unplanned "accidents" of line, color, and craft. Hand Job also includes photographs of found type, artists studios, and the tools that help make typography come to life. Whether you are looking to invigorate your design work or are just in need of a little offbeat inspiration, Hand Job will have you reaching for your favorite pen.
The book is available in MAGMA bookshop here in London.

ANYTHING FOR NOTHING
Jaguar Shoes presents a new exhibition titled " Anythiing For Nothing" featuring a selection of new works from Erosie. The show opens next week on the 14th Septemember and runs until the 21st October. There will be a private view on the 13th 7pm - 1am
Dutch based artist Erosie originally started his career in the early 90's as a "classic" graffiti writer. Having carved an impressive career as a commercial illustrator, he has evolved a fine art practice through his experimentation with conceptual pieces, scale and the exploration of various mediums. Erosie's current work explores the subversion of typography, and the loss of its intrinsic values. Considering the 'play' between image vs. text vs. 'graffiti-codes'.
Observing a culture, wherein successful communication alludes to supremacy, and these dislocated modes of communication embody our post-modern obsession with visual language. Erosie now exhibit's in galleries across the world but does not ignore his roots; he is still an active member in the SOL Graffiti crew and a prolific graf-writer throughout Europe.
The exhibition at DreamBagsJaguarShoes will showcase his latest work. This will present a cross section of works on this theme, including detailed, large-scale murals.
DreamBags JaguarShoes | 32-34 Kingsland Road | London
Make sure to pop over to Erosie's website and have a click around some of the fantastic work on his site.

Ericailcane & Blu @ Lazinc

Italy's modern day street insurrectionists BLU and Ericailcane have been making cutting edge art together for more than five years. SUPER FLUO will feature a series of new etchings and drawings not previously shown in the UK. Ericailcane belongs to a collective of artists known for their disparate artistic language styles. He studied at the academy of Arts in Bologna and has exhibited various works including sculptures, paintings, drawings, video and installations. Ericailcane’s style takes a sinister and morbid approach to animals depicted as fairytale creatures with human attributes. His playful drawings often resemble Victorian children’s illustrations and suggest an animal that might be one’s friend (an example as illustrated above right). Yet through the juxtaposition of images of life and death there is a palpable tension in the work, leading to feelings of threat and discomfort.
Ericailcane has shown in a number of successful group shows such as the Spina Festival in 2005, Santa’s Ghetto, 2006 and Sound Zero, September 2006 –January 2007. Ericailcane has also published a book of twenty drawings, titled ‘Il Buio’.
Blu’s artistic career started as a result of his interest in underground and illegal art, especially graffiti culture. His work begins as a sketch before being transferred to larger scale murals. His painting style is quite traditional; he uses brushes as well
as a paint roller as he blends the painting with the surrounding architecture. His inspiration stems from the desire to transform ordinary decaying places into beautiful and interesting environments. Blu has exhibited his work in Italy, South America, Spain and Germany. Like Ericailcane, Blu has also published a book of his drawings.
