OTHER LINO PRINTS

Super talented Canadian based artist Other is at the moment trying to raise funds to get to Barcelona for the Festival de Arte Contemporáneo en Barcelona, where he has been invited to paint a mural with two other Canadian artists Juan Carlos Noria and Patrick Thompson.

In efforts to raise funds he has created 170 Lino prints...6 different editions. All linoleum prints have been hand printed by Other without a press, all hand printed with a wooden spoon!!

THESE EDITIONS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO REPRINT!!!! because after each layer is printed it must be cut away to make way for the next layer..making them extremely rare prints and small editions ...all prints are numbered titled and signed and not very expensive.

If you are interested in buying some prints, send an email to this email address with the prints you want and you will be sent a paypal request : troy.lovegates [at] gmail.com

To see the other 5 prints check his flickr here.

50 YEARS OF HELVETICA

Blanka and Candy in association with Veer present '50' celebrating 50 years of Helvetica.

2007 sees the fiftieth anniversary of Helvetica. Created in 1957 by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann at the Haas type foundry in Switzerland, the typeface was originally christened Neue Haas Grotesk. Its name changed to Helvetica in 1960 in an attempt to take the typeface to a wider international audience.Over the years the typeface has been celebrated widely and used in many renowned applications, implanting its own indelible place in design history. From the beautifully implemented New York Subway signage system by Vignelli to its usage on the lowly generic EXIT sign, the flexibility of the typeface seems to have no boundaries.

Each artist was allocated a random year [1957 - 2006] from Helvetica's lifetime. From this they were asked to create an image based on an event of creative or cultural significance which occured during their allocated year. The artist were asked to consider the relevance of Helvetica when creating their final piece, there were no other rules applied other than if they used a typeface it must be Helvetica.

The '50' exhibition runs at the Design Museum in 2 installments before travelling around the UK and the world.
1957 - 1981: 19 July - 9 August.
1982 - 2006: 10 August - 31 August

Contributors incluce: The Designers Republic, Farrow, Antoine et Manuel, Experimental Jetset, Parra, Build, James Jarvis, Rinzen, Genevieve Gauckler, Adrian Shaughnessy and Phunkstudio to name a few.

KIRSTY WHITEN @ STOLENSPACE

This thursday StolenSpace present a new exhibition titled 'Trophy', featuring works by Kirsty Whiten.

These trophies are talismans, votive icons, pervy trinkets and fancy goods. They are objects to focus yearning, wishes and prayers for a justified fingering.……A collection of anthropological relics describing sacred sexual practices has been discovered…. A group of socially inept individuals eager to lose their inhibitions try to enact the rituals of a carnal tradition long disappeared….

There’s always been an element of reverence in Kirsty Whiten’s distinctive drawings, in the attention to detail and careful, time-consuming rendering of her peculiar subjects. With this series of ‘Votive Icons’ she takes her sharpened, reverent pencil and puts it to more literal use; creating objects to celebrate intimate touches; masturbation and fisting, in beautifully detailed drawings and sculptures with a twist.

Location:
StolenSpace Gallery | Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery | London
opens 6.30pm - 9.30pm 26th July closes 19th August

NEOGEO BOOK RELEASE

If one can identify any trend in today’s diverse design, it would be the new flirtation with geometrical forms and solid colours. Die Gestalten are to release a new book in September that documents this development and is accordingly called NeoGeo: A New Edge to Abstraction.

Basic forms such as circles, squares and triangles are being increasingly used in creative work. One sees crystalline structures, diamonds, rhombi, patterns and grid-like frames. Elements influenced by the psychedelic and OpArt of the 1960s and 70s are being combined with the acid colours of the late 80s.

NeoGeo makes clear that this current abstract work is not a nostalgic phenomenon; rather, it borrows from illustration, collage, typography and computer art to create a whole new visual language.

CUT UP COLLECTIVE

A new show from the Cutupcollective will open later next week and will centre predominantly around the local area of Hackney Wick- its streets, abandoned buildings, wastelands and scrap-yards. This, now largely fenced off, area is in a huge state of flux with the onset of the upcoming 2012 London Olympics displacing and destroying its current desolate existence as a place of creativity, play and freedom with control, surveillance, leisure and eventual homogenisation and gentrification. The work installed around the area intends to celebrate the area as it is, and was, and to act as a "sending off" or marker for the erasure of its history.

The exhibition centres around a fixed indoor base, that acts as a venue for the private view and to show film works, installations and maps listing the locations for the outdoor works.

More details about the opening night on 19th July will be available on the website the day before:
